Senior Services at UPMC About the Senior Care Institute Team At the Senior Care Institute, each patient is cared for by a treatment team that includes a geriatrician, a nurse practitioner, and a social worker. These health care professionals participate in the comprehensive evaluation of each patient and help to formulate a plan to address the problems that have been identified. Geriatricians are specially trained in the care of older adults. Institute geriatricians are faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and practice at UPMC Shadyside. Because institute physicians are committed to training future health care professionals, the treatment team may also include medical residents and fellows (physicians who are gaining further education in this specialty), who care for patients under a faculty physicians supervision. Like geriatricians, geropsychiatrists and geropsychologists have special training in the care of older adults. Nurse practitioners are registered nurses with additional training in patient assessment and treatment. They provide advanced nursing care; perform physical examinations; discuss patients histories with them; and provide diet, exercise, and other health education. Social workers with education at the masters or doctoral level assess emotional and mental health. They provide counseling and therapy -- for an individual, family, or group. In addition, social workers provide information about available community services that an older adult may need.
