Breast Care Consultative Service
The Breast Care Consultative Service located in the Women's Imaging Center at
UPMC Shadyside is a complete outpatient facility for women who have been diagnosed with or
are undergoing testing for breast cancer. The service provides a caring and supportive
environment in which patients' questions are answered about breast cancer diagnosis and
treatment.
Services
The Breast Care Consultative Service is a complete outpatient facility for women who have
been diagnosed with or are undergoing testing for breast cancer. The service provides
comprehensive assessment of diagnostic treatment and support options. The service also
offers support and education programs for patients and their families.
Staff
The service brings together a team of physicians including general surgeons, breast
reconstructive surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, medical oncologists and radiation
oncologists.
Support
UPMC Shadyside's comprehensive support programs for patients and their families include:
- Breast cancer risk assessment and personalized early detection program
- Counseling services
- Education and information (literature, videotapes & books)
- Mammography voucher program
- Rehabilitative services
- Social work services
- STRETCH program
Education
The Breast Care Consultative Service offers education programs on treatment options, which
include:
- Surgical services
- Breast reconstruction
- Radiation therapy
- Adjuvant chemotherapy/hormonal therapy
- Participation in ongoing adjuvant therapy clinical trials
Diagnosis
Additional diagnostic studies that may be necessary to evaluate the patient include same
day mammography, sonography, ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration sample, and surgical
evaluations, such as fine needle aspiration biopsy review.
Appointments
Patients are seen on an appointment basis. Physician referrals are accepted, as well as
patients seeking consultative services. All patients are contacted by the nurse
coordinator prior to their appointment to ensure complete services are provided at the
time of the appointment. If you are unable to keep an appointment, please call the office
at least 24 hours in advance at 623-4000.
Referrals
Patients who may be referred to the Breast Care Consultative Service include, but are not
limited to:
- Patients diagnosed with breast cancer in need of information and
treatment recommendations
- Patients suspected of having breast cancer
- Patients seeking a second opinion on diagnostic procedures performed at
other facilities
