Cardiology
For years, UPMC Shadyside has been setting standards for the way cardiology
is practiced in Pittsburgh, as well as in the state of Pennsylvania. Each year, over 7,000
heart patients are referred to the Pittsburgh Heart Institute, UPMC Shadyside's cardiac
program, making it one of the 24 largest in the country. More than 3,500 cardiac
catheterizations, 2,100 angioplasties, and 1,200 open heart procedures are performed at
UPMC Shadyside annually
 UPMC Shadyside's Division of Cardiology provides the most up-to-date services and
equipment for diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders of the cardiovascular system.
In addition, a full complement of non-invasive medical services is available to determine
the causes of cardiovascular disease. Services include echocardiology, electrocardiology,
electrophysiology, Holter monitoring, stress testing and a pacemaker/ arrhythmia clinic.
Cardiac Cath Labs
In UPMC Shadyside's sophisticated cardiac catheterization laboratories, specialists are
able to learn important facts about a patient's heart, such as the amount of blockage in
coronary arteries, diseases of the heart valves, and the concentration of oxygen in the
blood flowing through the heart.
PTCA
Catheterization may also be used for therapeutic purposes. One procedure called
percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), was pioneered in the Pittsburgh
area by physicians at UPMC Shadyside. It uses a balloon-tipped catheter to open blocked
arteries and, in many cases, replaces the need for open-heart surgery.
Cardiovascular Surgery
UPMC Shadyside's Cardiovascular Surgery Division offers a wide range of adult
cardiovascular surgical procedures. These include coronary artery bypass, coronary artery
valve replacement, aortic aneurysm surgery, and peripheral vascular surgery.
Cardiac Support Services
Support in this area is provided by specialized facilities, staff, and services. A few
examples of these are the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit, the Cardiac Care Unit,
cardiovascular nurse specialists, the Cardiac Catheterization laboratories, perfusion
services, and cardiac rehabilitation.
