Center for Joint Reconstructive Surgery
The Center for Joint Reconstructive Surgery is a group of
orthopedic surgeons, rheumatologists and allied health professionals committed to:
- High quality, cost-effective care of patients requiring joint
reconstructive procedures in the treatment of arthritis and other musculoskeletal
conditions.
- Focusing on clinical research and development of new reconstructive
surgical techniques and clinical outcomes.
- Physician and patient education.
The aims of the JRS are:
- To advance clinical and scientific knowledge of joint reconstructive
surgery.
- To track and monitor cost effectiveness and clinical outcomes of patients
undergoing reconstructive procedures by establishing a long-term outcome program while
tracking costs.
- To promote basic technological and clinical research in this field with
an emphasis on usable clinical systems.
- To foster a multidisciplinary approach and to stimulate the exchange of
information and collaboration through education vehicles such as lecture and seminars.
- To act as an authoritative body for the purpose of consultation in
matters concerning research, clinical care and development of these areas for Western
Pennsylvania.
- To train and encourage active participation of physician's, physician's
assistants, residents-in-training and fellows in the field.
Current strengths at UPMC Shadyside:
- Committed group of physicians and healthcare professionals.
- One of the high quality, low cost centers for total joint reconstruction
in Western Pennsylvania.
- Past emphasis on cost effectiveness evaluation of total joint replacement
within the Division of Orthopedic Surgery.
- One of few Centers that has been collecting prospective clinical
information by independent observers over the last four years through the Center for
Orthopedic Research's Total Joint Registry.
- Cost accounting and operating room information systems.
- Unique and internationally known research and development program in
medical robotics, preoperative planners and simulators, image guided and surgical
navigational systems.
- Active education program which has sponsored a series of conferences and
workshops for physicians and researchers (MRCAS Conference Series, CAOS/USA '97,
AAOS/Instructional Course Lecture 1998, Clinical Orthopedic and Related Research Symposium
Series)
- Collaboration with several departments and programs at CMU including the
Heinz School of Health Policy.
Sections within the Center for JRS:
- Clinical:
Orthopedic surgeons (who are actively performing joint reconstructive procedures at
UPMC Shadyside), rheumatologists, and allied health professionals.
- Clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness:
Collection and analysis of information on clinical outcomes and cost data to provide
feedback to surgeons.
- Research, Development and Education:
The Center for Orthopedic Research (COR), UPMC Shadyside and the Center for Medical
Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery (MRCAS), Carnegie Mellon University.
