Neurosurgery The Neurological Surgery Division at UPMC Shadyside provides state-of-the-art treatment and diagnosis of neurological and spinal disorders, including brain and spinal tumors and cerebrovascular disease such as aneurysms and stroke. Treatment methods offered by UPMC Shadyside neurosurgery specialists include operative and nonoperative procedures. UPMC Shadyside neurosurgeons provide the most advanced surgical care available, using modern techniques such as microsurgery, laser surgery, and radiosurgery using the Accuray. Accuray, also called the Cyberknife, is a completely noninvasive, computer-controlled radiation therapy that provides treatment in as many as 260 separate, small doses delivered from different directions. By splitting up radiation treatment in such small, precisely targeted doses, UPMC Shadyside neurosurgeons can tailor radiation delivery to the precise shape of a tumor anywhere in the body up to 6 centimeters in size. The system can even correct for small movements of the patient during treatment. For stroke patients and those at risk for stroke, carotid balloon angioplasty and stenting can open blocked blood vessels that threaten circulation to the brain. UPMC Shadyside neurosurgeons also offer interventional diagnostics designed to provide invaluable information to help chart a patient's course of treatment. A full array of support services complements the Neurological Surgery Division. A neurological intensive care unit, one of the few in the country at a private-practice-based hospital, offers specially trained nurses with experience in caring for neurosurgery patients. A neuroradiological service with specific expertise in neurosurgical procedures can provide electrophysiologic monitoring and Doppler and transcranial Doppler monitoring, providing neurosurgeons with detailed information that helps optimize the outcome of surgery. UPMC Shadyside neurosurgeons also serve as consultants to UPMC Shadyside's pain management program, offering surgical alternatives for patients with benign or malignant pain problems.
