Orthopaedics
UPMC Shadyside's staff includes 15 orthopaedic surgeons who work closely
with nurses, radiologists, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, and other
specially trained personnel to provide the best possible patient care.
Nearly 1,400 people annually, from teenagers to adults in their 80's, come to
UPMC Shadyside for orthopedic surgery. With 40 inpatient orthopedic beds (and overflow
space for 70), the hospital offers one of the largest comprehensive orthopedic facilities
in the region. UPMC Shadyside provides a wide range of surgical services from arthroscopic
surgery to total hip replacement.

Besides providing care, UPMC Shadyside is highly committed to research
and professional education:
- UPMC Shadyside was one of only three hospitals in the United States
selected to participate in clinical trials for ROBODOCTM robot-assisted surgery.
- The staff at UPMC Shadyside's Center for
Orthopedic Research is collaborating with Carnegie-Mellon University scientists and
engineers to study ways to improve surgery through the use of pre-operative computer
planning and computer assistants (such as the HipNav System).
