Physical Therapy
UPMC Shadyside offers a full range of physical therapy services for
hospitalized patients and outpatients. The department focuses on returning patients to
their maximum level of functioning, whether in work, athletics, or during the performance
of daily activities.
Treatment
Physical therapy treatment at UPMC Shadyside begins through a
referral from a physician. Following an evaluation, individualized treatment plans are
designed by therapists and physicians.
Staff
Therapists incorporate state-of the-art techniques and equipment into a patient's
treatment program. In addition to a licensed physical therapist, UPMC Shadyside's
rehabilitation team includes physical therapist assistants, athletic trainers, and skilled
support staff.
Patient Evaluation
Patient progress is closely monitored throughout their therapy program, and progress
evaluations are conducted frequently. Physician updates occur every 30 days for those who
are seen on an outpatient basis.
Education
The physical therapy program's key to success focuses on education of the patient and
their family. The patient is encouraged to become an active participant in their own
rehabilitation program. This participation, along with the help of the supportive staff,
brings the goals of physical therapy within reach.
