Rehabilitative Services
UPMC Shadyside offers a wide range of rehabilitative services that
include physical therapy and cardiovascular services. The Pittsburgh Center for Sports
Medicine provides athletic conditioning, injury prevention, athletic training and other
related services.
Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation
Involves the special monitoring of patients in the
prevention of or recovery from heart and lung diseases. The program focuses on decreasing
health risk factors, while improving the patient's functional ability and overall quality
of living.
Occupational Therapy
The Occupational Therapy program places an emphasis on mastering task-oriented skills that
are normally done at home. The department contains a fully equipped "home,"
providing patients with valuable hands-on practice.
Physical Therapy
UPMC Shadyside's physical therapy program incorporates state-of-the-art techniques and
equipment into the patient treatment program. Individually tailored programs are designed
to help relieve pain and restore the patient's maximum level of functioning.
Speech Therapy
Conducted six days a week by a certified speech pathologist, the Speech Pathology program
aims at improving: auditory comprehension, gestural language, verbal expression, motor
speech, perceptual skills, verbal reasoning, memory, and concentration.
Sports Medicine
The Pittsburgh Center for Sports Medicine (PCSM) provides expert health care to schools,
teams, and individual athletes. The best aspects of all types of medical care are brought
together to provide the safest possible competitive experience.
