The UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside Dietetic Internship is a 40-week program that begins in August and ends in mid-June. Program schedules are developed on a yearly basis to accommodate optimal scheduling of preceptors and affiliations. Schedules are provided to students upon arrival to the program. The internship program emphasizes clinical aspects, food service systems, community applications, and business and management through challenging practical assignments. Students gain unique and valuable experience in teaching and writing skills through assigned case studies, administrative projects, in-service work, group education sessions, menu and nutrition education material development, and business plan development. UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside is part of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, the leading integrated health care delivery system in western Pennsylvania, offering a full range of high-quality, geographically convenient health care services to the region. Although students are based at UPMC Shadyside, they benefit from experiences through many UPMC facilities and programs including:
To further enhance the intern's practical experiences, the program is affiliated with other community and specialized care facilities, such as:
In addition, interns are given the opportunity to explore other interests in the field of dietetics through independent study rotations. Rotating through these affiliations enables interns to participate in activities that improve the nutrition status of consumers, promote professional relationships, and advance the profession of dietetics. Registered dietitians directly oversee and evaluate over 1,000 hours of practice, acting as mentors and providing guidance to students. Following successful completion of the program requirements, students are eligible for active membership in the American Dietetic Association and qualify to sit for the national registration exam.
