History

Canterbury Place, established in 1859 as the Church Home Association, was later renamed the Episcopal Church Home and had the distinction of being the first incorporated charity in the City of Pittsburgh to provide housing for the elderly and infirm. The organization has been at is present site since 1861.

The first major expansion, in 1893, was a three-story building that is currently being renovated to accommodate Canterbury Place’s expansion of programs and services. In 1961, a 24-bed skilled nursing unit was constructed; in 1973, Lambeth Apartments, independent apartments for older adults, were added to the site.

In 1988, the Episcopal Church Home affiliated with Presbyterian University Hospital (which is now UPMC Presbyterian), and at the same time a new six-story building was constructed and named Canterbury Place.

Canterbury Place is conveniently located at 310 Fisk Street (near Penn Avenue at 40th Street). From Canterbury Place, the city’s major educational and cultural facilities, as well as fine shops and restaurants, are easily accessible. It is located just minutes from major highways and is easily reached from downtown and suburban Pittsburgh.
