Senior Services at UPMC
Health System
Benedum:
Specialty Programs
Benedum Geriatric Center outpatients benefit from a kind of "one-stop"
shopping -- many specialized services are available at one location. This is convenient
for the patient as well as the physician, who coordinates and monitors the specialized
care.
One of the specialty programs at the center is for older adults who have bladder
control problems. Another is for those who need blood-thinning medication.
In addition, patients may benefit from dental care and foot care programs provided at
the center. A dentist and podiatrist provide care at Benedum by appointment.
Improving Bladder Control
The Continence Program provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for those who have
bladder control problems. The first program of its kind in western Pennsylvania, the
Continence Program offers nonsurgical treatment methods to prevent bladder accidents.
Participants learn exercises and new skills to prevent urinary incontinence. Therapy
usually can be mastered in a just a few short visits to the center.
Monitoring Use of Blood-Thinning Medication
For patients who use blood-thinning medication such as Coumadin, close monitoring of the
bloods clotting qualities is an important part of medical care. To make this
monitoring convenient for patients, center staff arrange routine blood draws at the center
or, when needed, in patients homes. In addition, center staff are available to
answer questions and counsel patients and family members about the use of blood-thinning
medication.
