Dermatology at UPMC Health System

Department of Dermatology, UPMC Presbyterian

Expert evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of all skin problems -- from the most common to the most complex -- are available through UPMC Health System. Specialty programs offer advanced therapies (including the latest drug therapies) and traditional, laser, and cosmetic surgery for a wide range of dermatologic disorders.

In addition to treating dermatitis, acne, viral and fungal infections, rashes, and other skin disorders, UPMC dermatologists manage skin problems related to diabetes, lupus, and scleroderma and other underlying collagen skin or connective tissue diseases. They also offer the most effective testing and drug and surgical therapies for all forms of skin cancer.

UPMC dermatologists perform several kinds of corrective cosmetic procedures, including dermabrasion and chemical peeling. A new carbon dioxide-based laser treatment -- in which infrared light energy vaporizes ultrathick layers of skin tissue -- minimizes wrinkles, spider and varicose veins, and tattoos. Treatments for hair loss, including hair transplantation, and treatments for excess hair are available.

For severe psoriasis, outpatient phototherapy (the exposure of skin to ultraviolet light) and topical medications are effective in providing relief. Dermatitis, eczema, vitiligo, and pruritis also have been successfully treated using other ultraviolet light therapies, such as PUVA.

People who have developed skin irritations or lesions from being exposed to workplace chemicals or other environmental substances receive specialized care through the occupational and industrial dermatology clinic. Physicians in Health System wound healing clinics attend to diabetic skin ulcers and other sores and chronic wounds and help to coordinate rehabilitation services when necessary.

In conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) -- one of a select number of comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute -- UPMC Health System dermatologists provide the finest medical and surgical care for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, melanoma, cutaneous T cell lymphoma, and other forms of skin cancer. UPMC dermatology specialists stress preventive care and early diagnosis of skin cancer.

To evaluate promising drug therapies and other potential treatments, Health System dermatologists participate in a number of clinical trials. Currently under investigation are new therapies for cancer, ulcers, mastocytosis, viral and fungal skin infections, acne, hair loss, and the effects of aging on the skin.
