UPMC Center for Hemochromatosis and Iron Overload Disorders
The UPMC Center for Hemochromatosis and Iron Overload Disorders conducts a clinic for patients with iron overload problems and their complications. The clinic -- which provides comprehensive evaluation and management of hemochromatosis and other iron overload disorders -- serves both adults and children and provides families and community organizations with screening, diagnosis, and counseling services. In the United States, it is the only one of its kind in the northeast and Midwest. The clinic provides all aspects of care for hemochromatosis and iron overload disorders, including comprehensive medical care, genetic counseling, and nutrition counseling. Expert consultations are available in all areas related to iron overload and its treatment: transplantation, cardiology, hepatology, hematology, oncology, rheumatology, endocrinology, and orthopaedics. Clinic staff coordinate and integrate advanced subspecialty care for adults and children. Patients may self-refer to the clinic or be referred by their physicians. Appointments for patients are scheduled for Monday and Wednesday afternoons. For information about visiting the clinic, see Contact Us. Clinic staff are involved in ground-breaking research about iron overload disorders and their treatment and in developing educational programs about iron overload disorders for health care professionals. This work is done through the UPMC Center for Hemochromatosis, of which the clinic is a part. For information about reaching the center, see Contact Us.
