UPMC Center for Hemochromatosis and Iron Overload Disorders

Research

The faculty and staff at the UPMC Center for Hemochromatosis and Iron Overload Disorders are actively engaged in research regarding:

  • iron absorption

  • dietary and medical approaches to the prevention and treatment of iron overload

  • longitudinal health consequences of gene mutations associated with iron overload

  • hyperaccelarated iron removal for patients with acute organ failure

In these projects the center is collaborating with various entities within the UPMC Health System and the University of Pittsburgh: the Division of Cardiology, the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, the Department of Epidemiology, the Department of Genetics, and the Center for Bioethics and Health Law. Additional collaboration and participation are welcome.
