Minimally Invasive
Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery:
Information for Patients
UPMC cardiac surgeons offer new versions of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)
surgery. These procedures are designed to ease the stress of surgery on patients, reduce
the number of postsurgical complications, and speed recovery. In one type of CABG surgery,
off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) surgery, surgeons operate on the heart while it
beats; they do not stop the heart and connect the patient to a heart-lung machine. In
other procedures -- such as minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) --
surgeons operate through small incisions. The small size of the incisions often results in
faster recovery and less discomfort for the patient. |
