UPMC Shadyside Family Health Center
Medical Advice and Prescription Refills

During regular office hours, specially trained registered nurses are available to advise you over the telephone about home treatment of common illnesses. The nurse can also obtain advice from your doctor or help you decide if you need to come into the office. If your doctor is not available, one of his or her partners will be prepared to see you.

The nurse/medical advice hotline is 412-623-2834.

If you have a an urgent problem that requires medical advice after regular business hours, please call 412-456-7528.

Medication refills
The best time to get medication refills is when you are in the office for a visit. However, if your prescription will run out before your next visit, call us to get a refill.

The prescription refill hotline is 412-623-1181.
Please have your pharmacy telephone number and information from the prescription bottle ready

Certain medications, such as narcotic pain medications, may not be refilled without an appointment.  If you have not seen your doctor recently, a limited amount of your medication will be called in to the pharmacy until you can schedule an appointment.

Medical forms

Often, parents must arrange for completion of multiple physical exam forms for their children during a single year (sports physicals, camp physicals, etc.). If your child has been to the office for a regular well-child exam within the last year, we will be able to fill out most forms without another office visit. Mail the form or drop it off at the office. Your doctor will then fill it out based on the previous examination. Allow about a week for us to complete the form for you. All disability, workers’ compensation, premarital, or driver’s license forms require an office visit.

Hospital care

When you or an adult family member need hospital care, we will admit you to UPMC Shadyside. Your family physician, and any needed specialists,  will care for you in the hospital. We refer children who need to be hospitalized and patients with severe emotional problems to the appropriate hospital in Pittsburgh.

Specialty care and consultants

The Family Health Center offers on-site specialty care in obstetrics and gynecology and sports medicine. Your doctor will arrange for a visit with the specialist when needed.  The specialists also have a private practice at the Health Center and can see patients who have a family doctor elsewhere.

Consultants are also available on-site in the areas of psychiatry, social work, pediatrics, sports medicine, and surgery to work with your doctor.

Managed care/HMO

You may choose the Family Health Center as your primary care provider (PCP). At present, we provide managed care services for Keystone, Select Blue, UPMC Health Plan, Security Blue, Gateway, UPMC for You, Unison, Health Assurance, and United Health Care. If you need services that we do not have at the Health Center, your family doctor will approve a referral to a specialist who participates in your insurance plan. After you have scheduled the visit with the specialist, you must call the referral line at 412-623-1184. Our office will then fax the approval for the referral to the specialist, usually within five days.

Fees and billing

The Family Health Center wants to provide you with the best care at a fair cost. Fees are comparable to those of other local physicians and are available upon request. We accept Medicare, Blue Cross, Medical Assistance (ACCESS), Healthy Beginnings Plus, commercial insurance carriers, and cash, along with the managed care plans listed above. If you do not have insurance, we will provide care in the Family Health Center regardless of your ability to pay. If payment is a problem, we can help you apply for financial assistance through UPMC Shadyside. For more information about financial assistance, call 412-432-5500 or 1-800-854-1745.

Except for unusual circumstances, we expect copayments and payments for those services that we know will not be covered by your insurance at the time of service. You will receive a bill in the mail from University of Pittsburgh Physician Services for any unpaid charges and any balance for services only partially covered by your insurance. If you have questions about the bill or have difficulty in making payments, please call the number listed on your billing statement.

You may also receive a bill from UPMC Shadyside for nonphysician services you receive. For questions about these charges, call the hospital business office at 412-623-2029.
